OPOSSUMS (Didelphimorphia)

Opossums are marsupials, which are a class of mammals in which the young are born and are reared in the mother's pouch until they become mature. A female opossum may have up to three litters in a year. They typically give birth to 7 to 10 opossum pups, only 12 to 13 days after mating. This short gestation period is common amongst marsupials, as the young do most of their developing outside the womb. The opossum is a nocturnal animal and is commonly known as a possum. Their tail is used to assist in climbing and it also stores fat. Possums have opposable thumbs on their hind feet, which also assist them in climbing.
